NEW DELHI: Indialogue Foundation was pleased to contribute a collection of 70 books to Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies, Jamia Milli Islamia. Books are publication of Tughra Books and Blue Dome Press which are publishing houses in New Jersey, USA. Books Contribution Ceremony was held on Friday, 6th December 2013 in Institute. Prof. Akhtarul Wasey Honorary Director of ZHIIS, Fr. Victor Edwin a Ph.D. scholar in Christian-Muslim Relations, Mr. Qamar Agha a senior journalist and analyst, President Indialogue Foundation and Director Delhi Office Indialogue Foundation spoke during the event.

About Institute: Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi (ZHIIS) was established in 1971 in the memory of Dr. Zakir Husain one of the main promoters and sustainers of the Jamia Millia Islamia, great educationist and a former President of India, who believed in the creative civilizational Core of Islam. The Institute was set up with a view to promote the rational understanding of Islam with special reference to the points which can help in solving the problems of the modern age. It also aims at the study of the movements of liberalisation and modernisation in Islamic countries. The institute brings out two quarterly journals, one in English and other in Urdu respectively entitled as “Islam and the Modern Age” and “Islam Aur Asr-e-Jadeed”, apart from the Monthly Jamia. The first two journals have carved out a place for themselves among the leading academic journals on Islamics. They attempt at the critical evaluation of the various aspects of the modern western culture pointing out the elements which are in harmony with the spiritual and moral values of Islam and can contribute to the Muslim community. They also evaluate the contribution of the world religions, especially Islam, to the common intellectual and cultural heritage of man. They discuss the ways in which Islam and other religions can cooperate to meet the challenges of the growing scepticism and unbelief throughout the world. They also study the movements of social reforms in Muslims and other communities and assess the Muslim condition on the whole. The institute also plans to bring a series of an annual publication entitled Islamic Tradition. It shall be devoted to the totally of the Islamic intellectual and spiritual tradition, embracing all the different schools and periods of time.

Renowned historian and a former Vice-Chancellor of the Jamia Millia Islamia, Prof. Mohd. Mujeeb was the first Director of the institute. He was succeeded by the eminent Islamic scholars Prof. Zia-ul Hasan Faruqi and Prof. Maqbool Ahmad. Presently Prof. Akhtarul Wasey is the Director.

Zakir Husain Institute of Islamic Studies organizes the annual Prof. Mohd. Mujeeb Memorial Lecture every year on October, 30. Eminent personalities in various fields of intellectual and socio-cultural activity have so far delivered the lectures. The institute also organizes symposia, seminars and extention lectures on subjects relevant to its objects. ZHIIS is now planning to provide facilities to research scholars in concerned fields by associating them with its faculty.
